The 70-200mm f/2.8 is the perfect companion to Canon's 28-70mm f/2.8. Its zoom is flexible enough for a wide variety of applications including sports and portraiture and it's bright enough to use under the lights of stage or stadium. It's also especially useful for extending the range of your flash (extra important with a lens that can get you closer to far away subjects). Like the 28-70mm, this is part of Canon's series of lenses and, if you haven't shot with it, you'll be amazed at just how sharp Canon's Fluorite glass can be. Coupled with the 28-70mm, you'll command a range from 28 to 200mm at a bright and useful f/2.8 throughout the entire range!
One of the finest telephoto zoom lenses in Canon's EF line, this 70-200mm f/2.8 lens offers comparable optics to a single focal-length lens. The lens employs four UD-glass elements to minimize chromatic aberrations, creating sharp, high-quality images regardless of the application. The constant f/2.8 maximum aperture, meanwhile, makes the lens extremely popular among professionals. Other features include an inner focusing system with an Ultra Sonic Motor (USM), a 4.9-foot close focusing distance, and a 77mm filter size. The lens--which is compatible with EF 1.4x II and 2x II extenders--carries a one-year warranty.

Thumbs up. If you have a sturdy frame, a little muscle mass, and you don't require IS, then save yourself the extra $600-$700 and buy this lens. You won't be disappointed.

I got one of these off an auction site, used for somewhat less than a new one. Like others, I was worried about the weight and the value. Having owned and used it for over 2 months now, on a Canon 30D, all I can say is it is very well worth its price. I debated going with the f4.0, which is lighter, but then decided to get this one to allow me to use it in low light, get more blur in portraits, etc. Now, when I take long distance shots of my kids in dim lit school auditoriums, I can do that quite easily, without a flash. Just turn up the ISO and bingo, I get my shot (ISO over 400-800 gets noisy quite a bit, so there is a limit to this). Sports events, it is freeze action. And the PQ is just amazing. The weight is not bad at all. Only downside is it is HUGE and attracts lots of attention and questions.

I haven;t had alot of time just yet to use this lense. But everyone says that it is the best. I wanted it for sport pictures this summer at the ball park . Maybe I can give a better review after I really get started using it more.

This is a pricey product, but worth it if you are interested in elevating your game in photography to include well-focused action shots, even in indoor lighting conditions. It is easy to use, and I did not find it as heavy and awkward as some reviews I had read previously.

I highly recommend this lense! It works great with the 1.4x and the 2x extenders. I have not missed IS. I use this lense for birds in flight. The image quality is great!! I would recommend using the money saved by not getting the IS model and using it to purchase the 1.4x and 2x extenders. You will be happy with the different reaches if you shoot outdoors. It's like have three L lenses in one.
