The D60 with a 18-55 VR and 55-200 VR lens combination is a real winner. It covers most of the focal lengths a beginning photographer needs. Throw in a 50mm prime or a 35mm prime and you're pretty much set for a few years.

The construction quality, while not as good as higher end models, is still pretty great. Compared to the equivalent Canon models, the D60's grip is more comfortable and the plastic has a better feel. My D60 survived a pretty nasty fall (10 ft onto some rocks) and is still good as new.

There really are only 2 downsides to the D60:
(1) Only 3 autofocus points
(2) No in-body autofocus (the D90 does have one, if you want it)
- This shouldn't be too much of a problem if you don't already own a bunch of lenses. If you do, then get the D90.
- Also, many of the inexpensive primes won't autofocus on your D60. Get the new 35mm AFS or the 50mm AFS

Of course, now that the D3000 is out (for about the same price), I would get that. However, if you find the D60 at a good discounted price, it still is a great beginning DSLR.

It is an excellent trade of by the price you pay because you get very good quality pictures, good performance of the camera under poor light conditions (I had a coolpix 5700 before), user friendly menus to make adjustments and the auto mode lets "anybody" to use the camera although it is a professional one.

I got this camera as a gift for my wife before her trip to Scotland. We have other digital cameras including a lesser model Nikon. We also have a Nikon SLR film camera. This is by far the best quality and user freindly camera we have ever had. The results are stunning. Excellent picture with every shot.

Great clear pictures but I really wanted the D 90 and the movie features. That was a big differance along with the sensor area of 11 points insted of just 3. I really like the 90..

The kit really does have everything you need and it is a great deal! However my new Nikon D60 does not work. I haven't been able to take any pictures, because the shutter doesn't release and I get an error message saying that I need to press the button again to release. Really disappointing. So just be aware this can happen.
